Meppel Mosquito I
2017Meppel Mosquito I was part of the exposition 'Komaf' (Origin). People of a diverse groups living in the province of Drenthe (Netherlands) have been portrayed. Hind, the girl depicted in this portrait is third generation Dutch-Moroccan. Above all Hind is Dutch. Only very few times some Moroccan sentiment comes to the surface, e.g. when she is at a wedding. She finds Dutch weddings a bit dull and modest. She also notices differences when people come to dinner. In the Moroccan way dinners are more festive and abundant. But in the end Hind is Dutch/Drent because she was born and raised here. See also the painting Meppel Mosquito II

Bloom of youth
2017Awarded by the jury for 'Kunst in de etalage' In the second half of the 19th century the cream 'Bloom of youth' was very popular among American women of the upper and middle class. Using this cream gave them the white skin they wanted. With a white skin like that it was obvious that they did not need to work outside. It was a sign of prospetity. By using this cream the women not only obtained a white skin but also looked like etherical creatures. This volatility and vulnarability was very fashionable these days. It was unknown that one of the ingredients of the cream was the poisoness pigment white-lead. The women became ill and they payed their beauty dearly, namely with their death. Speedy portrait
2016Do you want to see how a portrait is painted? The first strokes of the brush are course and one can hardly see which direction the work will take. First coloured areas are painted in a coarse way with a large brush, and gradually finer brushes are used. Layer over layer is painted, this results in a vivid portrait, because one will always see some of the colours used in a layer beneath. Somewhere in the video I swipe the background away and I paint it all over again in another colour. Sometimes I do this with a whole portrait, then I look what is left and continue painting on the vague spots of paint that can still be seen. The result can be astonishing. The measurements of this speedy portrait is 20x20 cm and in reality it has been painted in 3 to 4 sessions of 20 minutes.

2016In this painting the farmer overlooks his vast land while radiating overview, control and proudness. If one wants to manage a farm like that, one has to be part of his land. This has been depicted by his transparent clothes. The pivot (for irrigation) and text reflect with which kind of systems this field manager has to cope. Because the pivot reaches out to the horizon, and because the land has been painted more or less perspectively, the size of the farmland is stressed. The used colours express the freshness and energy with which this young farmer runs his farm.
